Member Impact: Western Governors University
From students in Tennessee’s largest cities to those in the state’s most rural areas, Western Governors University (WGU) is expanding access to higher education and helping Tennesseans build skills to advance their careers.
Founded in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors, WGU was created around the idea that high-quality education should be accessible, affordable and flexible. Today, the nonprofit, accredited university offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees and professional certificates in business, information technology, education and healthcare through an online, competency-based model.
Rather than measuring time spent in a classroom, WGU’s approach to learning allows students to advance through their coursework by demonstrating what they know. Students can complete classes as soon as they demonstrate competency by passing the necessary assessments, giving them the flexibility to move at their own pace.
GROWING ACROSS THE VOLUNTEER STATE
WGU’s flexible approach is reaching more Tennesseans each year. Between 2022 and 2026, enrollment in Tennessee increased by about 50 percent.
Today, WGU has 5,889 active students in Tennessee, with 15,829 degrees awarded to 14,162 unique graduates. WGU students and graduates are represented in all 95 Tennessee counties, showing the university’s ability to reach Tennesseans regardless of where they live.
Year after year WGU continues to provide Tennesseans with flexible pathways to degrees and career advancement.
THE IMPACT IN RURAL COMMUNITIES
For students in rural Tennessee, earning a degree can come with challenges. Limited higher education options within driving distance and the cost of relocating can make pursuing a degree feel out of reach.
WGU’s online model helps remove those barriers. Students can complete their coursework from wherever they live, fit their education into their schedules, and pursue degree programs that may not be available in their local communities. They can continue living and working where they are while earning a degree.
MAKING EDUCATION AFFORDABLE
Affordability is another important part of WGU’s approach. Students pay a flat tuition rate every six months and can complete as many courses as they are able to finish during that term. WGU students typically spend $8,010 annually on tuition and fees, and the average student earns a bachelor’s degree in two-and-a-half years. WGU also offers scholarships and accepts federal student aid for those who qualify. Nationally, WGU graduates see an average salary increase of $14,671 within two years of graduation.
CONNECTING EDUCATION AND BUSINESS
WGU joined the Tennessee Chamber after opening a local office in Franklin in 2013. WGU’s connection with the Chamber creates an opportunity to grow, advocate and engage with the business community. Through this relationship, WGU values its ability to contribute to conversations around education and workforce development.
