Tennessee Chamber Supports Constitutional Amendment to Ban State Property Tax

Tennessee Chamber Supports Constitutional Amendment to Ban State Property Tax

The Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry is proud to join a broad coalition of business and community organizations supporting a proposed constitutional amendment to prohibit Tennessee from ever imposing a statewide property tax.

While Tennessee has not levied a state property tax since 1949, current law still allows for the possibility. This amendment would permanently ban a state property tax in the Tennessee Constitution, providing long-term certainty and reinforcing Tennessee’s reputation as one of the most business-friendly states in the nation.

“The Tennessee Chamber is excited to join the effort to ensure Tennessee never again imposes a state property tax,” said Josh Brown, President and CEO of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce. “The threat of high property taxes would be a barrier for businesses large and small to locate here, expand, and create jobs. Ensuring Tennessee remains a low-tax, competitive destination for businesses is a crucial part of economic success.”

The Tennessee Chamber believes that maintaining a predictable, low-tax environment is critical to attracting investment, supporting entrepreneurs, and allowing existing businesses to grow. Prohibiting a statewide property tax sends a clear signal that Tennessee remains committed to policies that foster economic opportunity and job creation.

The proposed amendment must receive final approval from the General Assembly before being placed on the ballot for Tennessee voters to consider in November.
